Why Does A Cake Cost So Much?

Frankly, I had asked myself this same question many years back, when I wanted a real 3-tier wedding cake for my own wedding. And this was my wedding "cake".....

And yes...you've guessed it right!

It's "Cake" because I (we) merely inserted the knife into a pre-cut slot of this dummy wedding "cake". Nonetheless this "cake" is elegant and if I didn't say so, you probably least suspect its a dummy.

Anyway, I told hubby some time back that I'll be making our daughter a wedding cake/cupcakes when she gets married in future! I'm dead serious!!! But hubby laughed...and he had some reservations....maybe because our daughter is only 2 coming to 3? Well...I'd say everything begins with a dream.....

3 Tier Longevity Birthday Cake.

For this cake, I decided to give it a modern twist with some deviation from the usual Peach shaped or Number cakes you usually come across. The yellow, orange and red combination brightens up the cake, yet does not make it look too feminine. Set in fresh cream, this 3 tier mango cake is by far my biggest cake... it fed more than a hundred pax! I hope G and her father are happy with my design.

A hand moulded 壽 figurine and 29 longevity peaches (including the mini peach on Shou's left palm)....with the number 9 symbolising longevity.

Also hand crafted, a pair of (edible) auspicious scrolls well wishing Mr T. (Wordings hand-written by hubby)

Up close and personal with Shou, and behind him is a tree blooming with flowers..... symbolising 花開富貴.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to my readers!

Attempted the Flaky skin Teochew Yam Mooncakes last night and here are some photos to share....

These mooncakes were all made from scratch, right from frying yam paste to making the doughs....and it took me almost a day to do just 20. (Well, in between we went to the beach and out for lunch)

Just about to pop them into the oven. You can also deep fry them but I prefer baking so they won't be too oily.

Freshly out from the oven. I knew my teochew yam mooncakes were going to be a success when I saw the layers slowing "opening up" in the oven. Given this is my first attempt, I'm quite happy with the results :)
